Chongqing plaques beginners should recognize are the cliff-stilt, porcelain-port, monument, and cableway name boards you will photograph — not classroom flashcards. Learn each place’s characters before you go, then match them on the gate.
As of July 2026, VibeHanzi publishes 8 Chongqing landmarks with name-character breakdowns and optional short games.
Landmark name characters
- 1. Hongyadong (洪崖洞, Hóng Yá Dòng) — characters on the name: 洪崖洞. Chongqing’s cliff-side stilt stack above the Jialing — eleven floors of balcony gold after dusk, snack noise spilling down the rock. Not a real cave despite the name.
- 2. Ciqikou (磁器口, Cí Qì Kǒu) — characters on the name: 磁器口. An old Jialing porcelain port turned steep snack lanes in Shapingba — the name 磁器口 still means the river mouth that shipped bowls.
- 3. Jiefangbei (解放碑, Jiě Fàng Bēi) — characters on the name: 解放碑. Chongqing’s CBD plaza where a white Liberation stele stands in neon — 解放碑 names the memorial and the shopping ring that grew around it.
- 4. Yangtze Cableway (长江索道, Cháng Jiāng Suǒ Dào) — characters on the name: 长江索道. Chongqing’s hanging river cabin — steel cables, damp wind, hillside banks at mismatched heights. Fog may erase the towers; the sway stays.
- 5. Liziba (李子坝, Lǐ Zǐ Bà) — characters on the name: 李子坝. Yuzhong’s hillside Line 2 stop where a monorail pierces a residential tower — claim the street rail for the pierce, or ride the carriage through the building yourself.
- 6. Chaotianmen (朝天门, Cháo Tiān Mén) — characters on the name: 朝天门. Yuzhong’s river-mouth tip — pier wind where Yangtze and Jialing meet, and a gate name that once faced the capital.
- 7. Shibati (十八梯, Shí Bā Tī) — characters on the name: 十八梯. Yuzhong’s stair city between upper and lower town — steep stone flights, rebuilt old-town weave, cliff-neighborhood grain underfoot.
- 8. Nanshan One Tree (南山一棵树, Nán Shān Yī Kē Shù) — characters on the name: 南山一棵树. Nan’an’s hillside overlook — lean out over Chongqing’s river-city bowl while night glitter pools in the peninsula below.

FAQ
- Is 洪崖洞 the right first plaque if I only night-walk Jiefangbei?
- Hongyadong’s cliff-stilt characters help when you approach from the river stairs. If you stay on the Jiefangbei grid, learn 解放碑 first — the monument board sits in the pedestrian cross where English fades into neon.
- Does Ciqikou’s 磁 character show up on the cableway?
- No — porcelain-port 磁 is Ciqikou’s own brand. The Yangtze Cableway leans on 长江 / 索道. Treat them as separate decks so you do not mash a teahouse lane into a gondola ticket hall.
