Why we exist

Most language apps teach syllabus Chinese. First-time visitors need the opposite: a handful of characters on the plaque, gate, and metro board in front of them. VibeHanzi exists so zero-basis English-speaking travelers can recognize those shapes on site — without pretending a weekend of drills makes you fluent.

Who it's for

English-speaking travelers with little or no Chinese who want to recognize the characters they will actually see on plaques, gates, and street signs — light prep before the trip, not classroom drills.

How it works

Path: City → Spot deep-learn → optional Play. Pick a city, open a landmark, learn name and scene characters with memory hooks, then (if you want) lock them in with short replayable games. Browse is free; no signup required for published spots.

Who writes this

Guides and spot pages are published by VibeHanzi editorial (Travel hanzi editors) — an editorial organization under VibeHanzi, not a single named academic and not a fake personal byline. We do not invent credentials. Contact: [email protected].

How we write

Spot pages are written for zero-basis English-speaking travelers standing at the place — sensory cues, plaque-ready memory hooks, and short culture notes that end in something you can notice or photograph. Literal and on-site senses for characters are checked against standard Chinese dictionaries (新华字典 print edition / CC-CEDICT); place facts lean on official or heritage references listed in each spot's Sources footnote.

Drafting may use AI-assisted tools for structure and wording variants; every published spot is edited against dictionary senses, linked sources, and our internal quality gates before it goes live. We do not publish unreviewed machine dumps.

Sources policy

Every published spot lists checkable citations in its Sources section — heritage or official place pages where possible, plus dictionary senses for characters. We prefer deep links over agency homepages; when we use Wikipedia or a print dictionary, the publisher label says so. Field notes appear only when we have a real visit to cite — we do not invent walk dates. Suggest a correction

Found a wrong reading, place fact, or broken source link? Email [email protected] with the page URL and what should change — we review traveler reports against dictionary and heritage sources before editing.

What we are not

Not an HSK course, not stroke-order practice, not a full language school. We optimize for “recognize it on site and tell a 15-second story,” not exam scores. Spot pages lead with a dinner line you can copy and retell.
