Chengdu Plaques Beginners Should Recognize

Landmark name characters for Chengdu — Kuanzhai Alley, Wuhou Shrine, and Du Fu Thatched Cottage.

Chengdu plaques beginners should recognize are the Qing lane, Three Kingdoms shrine, and thatched-cottage name boards you will photograph — not classroom flashcards. Learn each place’s characters before you go, then match them on the gate.

As of July 2026, VibeHanzi publishes 8 Chengdu landmarks with name-character breakdowns and optional short games.

Landmark name characters

  1. 1. Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子, Kuān Zhǎi Xiàngzi) — characters on the name: 宽窄巷子. Shoulder room, then the squeeze — gaiwan tea behind gray-brick lintels in Chengdu’s Qing twin lanes.
  2. 2. Wuhou Shrine (武侯祠, Wǔ Hóu Cí) — characters on the name: 武侯祠. Cypress shade and incense courts around Zhuge Liang’s Marquis title — 祠 halls, statue rooms, and stele pavilions, with Liu Bei’s memory on the same axis beside louder Jinli.
  3. 3. Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂, Dù Fǔ Cǎo Táng) — characters on the name: 杜甫草堂. Bamboo cools the walk; wet stone under leaf-shadow; a rebuilt thatched cottage by the pond keeps straw smell and Du Fu’s Chengdu-era lines on shaded steles.
  4. 4. Panda Base (熊猫基地, Xióng Māo Jī Dì) — characters on the name: 熊猫基地. Bamboo hushes the city; glass meets a silhouette on its own chew-clock — Chengdu’s giant-panda breeding research base.
  5. 5. Jinli (锦里, Jǐn Lǐ) — characters on the name: 锦里. Lantern timber and skewer steam beside Wuhou Shrine — a rebuilt bazaar lane with night snack grid and shrine-side spill.
  6. 6. Chunxi Road (春熙路, Chūn Xī Lù) — characters on the name: 春熙路. Wall-scale screens after dark, glass flagships, snack steam from metro mouths — Chengdu’s core shopping mile with 春熙路 still carved on the wall relief.
  7. 7. Dujiangyan (都江堰, Dū Jiāng Yàn) — characters on the name: 都江堰. West of Chengdu, walk the Min River fish-mouth where whitewater still splits toward farmland — canal roar under the bridges, a 堰 that has watered the plain for more than two thousand years.
  8. 8. Qingcheng Mountain (青城山, Qīng Chéng Shān) — characters on the name: 青城山. West of the Chengdu Plain, climb mist-pine paths to Daoist 观 halls and feel 青城天下幽 hush — mountain cool after city heat, stone steps through shade.

FAQ

Do Kuanzhai Alley’s 宽 and 窄 appear on other Chengdu plaques?
They are this lane pair’s joke — wide vs narrow. Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Cottage reuse other characters (祠, 草堂). Learn Kuanzhai as a tempo lesson, then switch decks when you move to the shrine or cottage.
Should panda-base characters come before old-town lanes?
Only if the base is your first stop. Otherwise start with Kuanzhai or Jinli name boards you will walk past between tea and dinner — 基地 characters wait behind a ticket gate and a different crowd.
