First-Day Chengdu Hanzi: Metro, Snacks, and Wayfinding
Day-one characters in Chengdu — metro lines, exits, spicy-menu cues, and station boards before Kuanzhai or the panda base.
By VibeHanzi editorial · · Canonical
First-day Chengdu hanzi show up in airport buses, Line 1/3 corridors, and hotel lobbies long before Kuanzhai Alley timber. English exists, but snack boards and exit funnels still lean on Chinese shapes. Learn a small transit-and-menu set on day one; leave shrine and cottage name characters for a focused evening on Chengdu spots.
As of July 2026, VibeHanzi covers 4 cities (Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Shanghai) and 36 published landmarks, with 221 spot-taught characters in the Characters by place index. Each spot page breaks down name characters with memory hooks and optional short games. Guides and games are free; no account is required to browse published places.
What is different from Beijing day one
Shared toolkit: 线, 站, 出入口, 换乘. Chengdu adds earlier contact with 辣 on lunch boards and more bike/e-bike share docks labeled only in Chinese. Fewer endless security loops than Beijing — more “which exit dumps you into a snack street?” decisions.
Day-one character set
- 线 / 站 — line and station. Confirm once against English, then trust the shape.
- 出入口 — exit/entrance letters for mall and metro mixes near Chunxi.
- 换乘 — transfer. Useful at big interchange halls.
- 辣 — spicy. Day-one lunch insurance.
- 地铁 / 公交 — metro / bus at airport ground transport.
Airport to hotel script
- Review 线、站、出、换、辣 once before baggage claim.
- Follow bilingual metro signs; use 出口 letters for the hotel side.
- Save plaque beginners for tomorrow’s landmarks.

FAQ
- Is Chengdu Metro easier than Beijing for zero-basis travelers?
- Line colors and bilingual station names help, but exit letters and 换乘 walks still hide English. Learn 线 / 站 / 出入口 once — the same toolkit works when you later ride toward Kuanzhai or the panda base.
- Should I learn 辣 on day one or wait for dinner?
- If lunch is on the itinerary, learn 辣 before you sit down. Metro characters get you to the table; menu heat tags keep the first meal from becoming a dare.
- Do I study Chunxi Road characters on the plane?
- Save retail-street boards for the night before shopping. Day one after landing is airport→metro→hotel. Chunxi and Taikoo Li characters stick better when you are not jet-lagged in a transfer corridor.
